Biological Wastewater Treatment

How does it work?

Biological water treatment is a commonly used method of purifying and filtering industrial and domestic wastewater. It’s a process that has been used in the past in cesspools. Nowadays we see this process in septic tanks and IBA’s (Individual treatment of waste water). This biological water purification process is based on aerobic or anaerobic bacteria that are able to break down organic waste products in the water and purify them from various (organic) impurities in a 100% natural way.

In this biological process, the following steps are taken to purify the water:

  • The wastewater enters the tank.
  • In the tank, the anaerobic/aerobic bacteria get to work breaking down the impurities in the water.
  • The impurities sink to the bottom where they are further broken down.

This biological process can very quickly be thrown out of balance when other substances are discharged into the wastewater such as chemical cleaning agents or anti-bacterial agents such as chlorine. All these agents have such an influence on the working bacteria that they can no longer do their work properly. This can often cause blockages. To prevent this, extra bacteria are usually added to the tank to give the working micro-organisms more capacity. Of course, it is also important to stop using the anti-bacterial agents. Keep in mind when purchasing bacteria whether you use an aerated or non-aerated system. Below are a number of products that we offer.
